Historically, the first written reference appears in the Old Testament of the Bible,

which recognised the existence of prostitution, but constantly warned of its dangers.

Do not prostitute thy daughter, to cause her to be a whore, lest the land fall to whorem,

and the land become full of wickedness.

To the ancient Hebrews, prostitution was a necessary evil.
